From Bloom to Boom: Get Back on Your SUP Board in Clearer SA Waters

Happy New Year from the team at SUP Mojo! We're kicking off 2026 right here in Seaford, and there's some really positive news for stand-up paddleboard lovers across South Australia who've been eager to get back on the water.

The Karenia algal bloom that challenged our coasts through much of 2025 has been a tough one for everyone who loves the ocean. Starting in early 2025 on the Fleurieu Peninsula, this naturally occurring bloom spread to affect metropolitan beaches, Yorke Peninsula, and beyond, causing discoloured water, foam, and sadly, impacts on marine life.

The encouraging update? As we head into January 2026, monitoring shows significant improvement. Many metropolitan Adelaide beaches are now reporting no detectable Karenia cells, with others at only low background levels. The mid coast and Fleurieu Peninsula areas – including right here around Seaford – are looking much clearer, and water quality is steadily recovering.

Of course, blooms like this can shift with weather, winds, and currents, and some patches may still be present in regional spots. Safety first, always:

  • Check the latest reports on algalbloom.sa.gov.au or the Beachsafe app before your paddle.
  • Steer clear of any water that appears discoloured, foamy, or shows signs of stressed marine life.
  • When in doubt, wait it out – the good days are worth it!

At SUP Mojo, based in Seaford, we're stoked to see our local mid coast waters bouncing back for some fantastic SUP sessions. Whether you're gliding across calm bays, exploring the stunning Fleurieu coastline, or just enjoying a sunset paddle, South Australia's beaches are perfect for it.
